Camp Epic

What is CAMP EPIC Indonesia?

CAMP EPIC was organised by the US embassy under an office named the Regional English Language Office in Jakarta. The office focuses on the quality of English teaching, therefore this year they initiated a program called CAMP EPIC. This camp is for 22 talented 4th year university students who will be the future leaders in English teaching. This year, there were over 225 applicants for this program and the acceptance rate was only 10%. There were 21 campers coming from all over Indonesia and 1 camper who was from Timor Leste. So it was a very international program.

What did we actually do there?

During the camp, all participants were engaged within an interactive format with expert teachers and American professionals, teacher workshops, brainstorming, learning, and fun. The camp format also encouraged reflection and interaction during informal activities such as games, songs, and hiking. Not only during class but also during meals and breaks, participants had the opportunity to communicate with native speakers, expert teachers, and each other – enriching their English language proficiency and awareness of teaching practices.

The word “EPIC” itself stands for Empowered, Prepared, Inspired, Connected in hope that at the end of the program, all campers turn to EPIC English Teachers.

How to apply to be Camp Epic Campers 2016?

Being selected to be one of the participants for the CAMP EPIC Indonesia is not really too difficult but at the same time it wasn’t easy.

  1. First, you must be an English student in your fourth year currently working on your thesis at the time you are applying.
  2. Second, selectors will be looking for fewer high-quality students rather than lots of students. Even if your curriculum vitae writing is really promising, they will pay more attention to your work as a youth leader and your contribution during your study in university. They will also assess what you are working on and your proposed follow- up activity in as a potential participant in CAMP EPIC Indonesia.
  3. Last but not the least, is being honest to yourselves. They will give us several surveys to be filled out in order to examine our characteristics. So, it is important to fill the survey sincerely.

The 2 week camp was the best camp experience ever. Not only did we learn about teaching English, we also learned how to cooperate with other people, build cross-cultural understanding and mutual respect within a diverse group

At last, we created a great family from all over Indonesia, Timor Leste and the U.S. These bonds will last forever.

I hope that next year camp epic camper is YOU!

  1. After reading all about CAMP CAMPING I feel like to apply as a participant of this camp. I am an English teacher, this is my second year teaching English in one of East Nusa Tenggara senior schools. But I graduated from Mathematics Education. I teach English because there’s lack of English teacher in East Nusa Tenggara. Since I become and decided to teach English I promise myself to continue equip myself with join English course regularly. I really want to be proffesional and competent in what I am doing. That’s why I write this letter. I hope I can apply CAMP CAMPING eventhough I am not a senior student in College. Due to my purpose is to learn more how to teach English and get the opportunity to be taught by native speakers and expert teachers. Thank you for your attention. God bless
