Environment

MITRA has three main thematic pillars: the program-based pillars described here include both short-term actions and long-term impacts. The third pillar is MITRA HIJAU : the Environmental, community-based pillar. MITRA HIJAU (Green Movement and Community Service)

  1. Short term – to facilitate various green community-based programs in response to local demand/need.
  2. In the past these programs have included strategic reforestation, natural disaster risk mitigation:

For example – The ‘Green Schools Movement’ – facilitating tree planting in schools through student facilitators building partnerships between local government (Forestry and Education Departments) and local NGOs and Foundations for tree planting programs in schools and other areas identified as priority.

  1. These programs should encourage participation from MITRA members particularly for monitoring and evaluation (M&E). This has been a key gap in the past for environmental protection and conservation programs.
  2. Long term – raising awareness through teaching Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) materials in schools and communities. MITRA HIJAU ESD materials include games and Forests, Oceans and Mangrove Posters.
  3. Long term – bridging the gap between universities and local communities as well as between government and civil society through the shared goals of maintaining our natural environment and biodiversity.
  4. Forming environmental programs through the MITRA LSM programs.
